Speech Pathology Referral Guide: How to Refer to Talkshop Speech Pathology

I am a Parent / CarerㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤI am a Professionalㅤ

If you have noticed a delay in communication, a change in swallowing, or a gap in social skills, getting support shouldn’t be the hardest part of your day. Understanding the speech pathology referral process can make it easier to connect someone with the support that suits their unique needs and preferences.

At Talkshop Speech Pathology, we don’t believe there is a “right” way to communicate—only your way. Our goal is to provide a supportive environment where neurodivergent individuals can build on their unique strengths, advocate for their needs, and find the communication tools that work for them.

Whether you are a healthcare professional, a Support Coordinator, or a family member, this guide explains the speech pathology referral process and how to connect a loved one or client with our team.

Who Can Make a Speech Pathology Referral to Talkshop?

One of the most common questions we hear is, “Do I need a doctor’s referral for speech therapy?” In Australia, speech pathologists are primary contact practitioners, meaning the answer depends on how you plan to fund the sessions.

Families & Self-Referrals

You do NOT need a GP referral to see us as a private client. Self-referral is the fastest way to start. If you are a parent or primary carer, you can book a Free Initial consult, speech therapy or even assessment directly via phone, video call or email.

💡 Pro-Tip for Parents:

You don’t need to fill out a long, formal referral form to get started. Simply call us at 02 7209 3838 to book a FREE Initial Consultation. We will gather all the necessary details during that first conversation.

General Practitioners (GPs) & Medical Specialists

We value our collaborative relationships with medical professionals. To ensure the person you support receives the appropriate rebates and care coordination, please note:

  • Medicare Schemes: We accept referrals under the Chronic Disease Management Plan (CDMP) and the Complex Neurodevelopmental Pathway (M10). Please ensure the referral is addressed to Talkshop Speech Pathology.
  • Documentation: Please send the GP referral and any relevant information to [email protected].

NDIS Support Coordinators

We understand the importance of prompt service delivery and detailed reporting. We currently have capacity for Plan-Managed / Self-Managed / NDIA Agency Managed participants.

  • How to Initiate:  Contact us directly at 02 7209 3838 or [email protected]
  • Required Info: Please include the participant’s NDIS number, goals from their current plan, plan dates and your contact details.
  • Services: We provide assessments, ongoing speech therapy. To explore all our services and see how we can support, check out our How We Help page.

Educators & Support Workers

While teachers and early childhood educators may not submit formal medical referrals, they play a vital role. Educators can support families by sharing observations that help our team tailor a personalised speech pathology plan for each child, including their communication, language, and literacy skills.

School-Based Sessions: Talkshop Speech Pathology also offers sessions within school settings, making therapy more accessible and integrated into the child’s learning environment.

When is a GP Referral Actually Required?

While you can always start therapy privately without one, a GP referral for speech therapy is necessary if you wish to access specific funding or rebates, such as:

  • Medicare Rebates (via a Chronic Disease Management Plan and Complex Neurodevelopmental Pathway (M10))
  • DVA Support (Department of Veterans’ Affairs)

Note: If you are waiting on a GP appointment for a Medicare Plan, you can still book your free initial consultation, speech therapy and assessment with us now and provide the paperwork once it’s finalised.

Our Speech Pathology Process

Once a referral to speech pathology is received, our process is simple, transparent, and tailored to the person’s strengths and needs:

  • Initial Contact: Our team confirms your details and explains what to expect in a way that’s clear and supportive.
  • Assessment: A Talkshop clinician conducts a thorough assessment of communication, language, literacy, or swallowing skills, considering individual learning styles and sensory needs.
  • Therapy Plan: We create a personalised speech therapy plan that reflects the person’s goals, preferences, and strengths, including practical strategies for home, school, or daily life.
  • Ongoing Support: We monitor progress, adjust goals as needed, and coordinate with schools, educators, or other healthcare providers to ensure consistent, supportive care.

What Information Do We Need?

Regardless of who is making the referral, having these details ready will speed up the process:

  • Contact Details: Full name, date of birth, email and phone number.
  • The “Why”: A brief description of the concern (e.g., “Late talking,” “Stuttering,” “Lisp,” “Swallowing” or “Difficulty following instructions”).
  • Availability: Preferred days and times for an assessment or ongoing therapy.

Speech Pathology Funding Options at Talkshop

Accessing speech therapy is an important step in supporting communication, language, literacy, and swallowing difficulties. At Talkshop Speech Pathology, we understand that cost can sometimes be a barrier, so we offer a range of funding options to make therapy more accessible and inclusive for everyone.

NDIS Funding for Speech Therapy
The National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) provides funding for people with disabilities who need support to improve communication, independence, and participation in daily life. Speech pathology services can be included in an NDIS plan if they are considered reasonable and necessary to help a participant achieve their personal goals.

Medicare Rebates for Speech Pathology
Some clients may be eligible for Medicare rebates for speech therapy through a GP-managed Chronic Disease Management (CDM) Plan.

Private Health Insurance Rebates
Many private health insurance plans include coverage for speech pathology under extras or allied health benefits. The rebate amount varies depending on the level of cover and the insurance provider.

Fee Support and Community Programs
Talkshop is committed to making speech therapy accessible to all members of our community. We offer several initiatives to reduce the cost of therapy for families experiencing financial hardship:

  • Low Income Health Care Card Discount: Eligible families may receive up to a 20% reduction in therapy fees with a valid Low Income Health Care Card.
  • Speech Therapy Sponsorship Program: For families not receiving NDIS funding, this program provides access to affordable speech therapy through supervised student clinicians, offering significantly discounted assessment and therapy services.
